Prefix

A NHC member can apply for a prefix after 12 months of membership to one of the affiliated clubs (currently Southern Hamster Club, Midland Hamster Club and Northern Hamster Club). This prefix is then the name you would show under. For example, if Joe Public had been a member for a year of the Midland hamster club he could fill in a prefix form (available from the club secretary) for 'Public Hamstery'. The name can be anything you wish, though it is submitted for approval (any indecent names will not be allowed) and is checked against a list of current prefixes (and a back log of those that have 'recently' expired). No similar prefix is allowable, so if there was someone already as 'public hams', or had a name that sounded or looked similar then the member requesting 'Public Hamstery' would be asked to choose a different prefix.

A list of current prefixes is published in the journal on a regular basis. Cheques are made payable to ‘National Hamster Council’ and are to be sent with either form for new prefix or for renewal to the National Secretary (Details can be found on the back of the Journal). Please contact the National Secretary to find out other payment options (Paypal, postal order, etc).

There is a £5 charge to first set up your prefix, which lasts 12 months. You will be notifed when you aproach time to renew.  Renewals cost £2 within 3 months of due date, after this time they will cost £5 to renew.

The process of paying for a prefix can now be done on-line via paypal.

The NHC promotes a high standard of hamster care and welfare. Membership of an NHC affiliated club means you automatically agree to follow your club's rules and those of the Constitution. In addition, you also agree to follow the separate NHC Code of Practice. The NHC expects ALL its members to keep their hamsters in suitable housing, with some type of enrichment. There are no exceptions. A copy of the NHC Code of Practice can be found HERE
